A majestic evergreen magnolia species with large glossy leaves with a russet fuzz on the underside. Huge 20cm single creamy white sweetly fragrant (somewhat like sweet lemonade) flowers scent the air in June to frost. The petals are so thick and so firm they probably can stand up to a gail force wind. Fast growing in the right spot. It is not uncommon for mature trees to reach 20 meters tall with half the spread. Of course there are smaller cultivars but here we offer the species in all its glory.

An extremely rare Chinese cousin to North America's Kentucky Coffee Tree. Almost extinct in China and nearly unheard of in cultivation whether in public, private gardens and arboretums. Form is very much like its North American cousin in size and form, except for its remarkable foliage that starts life a royal purple then becoming blue green but retains its purple tint on the reverse. Leaflets are more perfectly oval than lanceolate like is North American kin. Totally unique. Hardiness testing proves this species can survive in pots without protection to -12C without any damage.

Beautiful paper thin peeling cinnamon coloured layered bark. If this wasn't distinctive enough, the green trifoliate leaves are often coarsely serrated or lobed. Autumn colour consists of brilliant oranges and reds. A very distinctive and unusual maple hardy enough to be used as a street tree in full sun. Relatively slow grower that will eventually reach 14 meters tall with about equal spread in 50 years. Tolerant of clay soils. No pest problems.

One of the last magnolias to bloom in spring, its incredibly sweet fragrant creamy white cup shaped flowers can reach 30cm across, far out sizing M. grandiflora. This hardy species looks deceptively tropical with its massive mid green leaves which have a silvery white reverse. A medium sized tree reaching 10m in height with near equal spread. Being relatively thin for their size, the delicate leaves can be damaged in strong winds so its best to seat the tree in sheltered sites. Wide spreading branches make it an ideal shade tree. Its been known to bloom at a very young age (3 years is one quote).

A beautiful iconic native tree of the North American Pacific Coast. A broadleaf evergreen tree with huge clusters of incredibly sweet honey scented nectar filled bell white flowers in the spring. You can hear the buzz of hummingbirds and other nectar seekers. In the fall, green berries ripen to a brilliant orange. The rich red-cinnamon coloured bark peels off in sheets during the growing season revealing the smooth new green-tan coloured bark. Grows to 12m tall with 6m spread with graceful twists and artful curves (never straight).

This heavily branched deciduous beauty grows more tree like with a pyramidal form. In May/June flowers open in profuse display releasing a sweet fruity fragrance from ivory white blooms. Dark crimson boss of stamens gives quite a contrast of colour. Nodding blossoms are cup shaped and appear with the leaves in late spring. Leaves and tepals are longer and narrower than M. sieboldii and the seed is notably smaller.
