Here is a short list of the organic fertilizers. Those unfamiliar with NPK (in parenthesis) is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium values respectively.

Alfalfa Meal (3-2-2) A gentle naturally balanced fertilizer on its own. An excellent source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and contains growth stimulants (Triacontanol) and trace elements. Good for roses as this helps strengthen canes and promote flowers. Application rate: 5-10 kg/10 sq meters.

Blood Meal (12-2-1) A quick source of nitrogen and iron that does not burn plants. Use early and again in the mid growing season to provide nitrogen hungry crops such as grasses (includes corn). Great for enhancing microbial activity for compost bins. Also great for repelling deer, squirrels and rabbits. Application rate: 1-2 kg/10 sq. meters.

Bone Meal (3-15-0) An ages long lasting and rich source of phosphorous and calcium (24%). When sprinkled in the transplant hole when seating plants, it provides nutrients to promote root and vegetative growth. Enhances colour and development of fruit and flowers. Can be used for almost all plants. Application rate: 1-2 kg/10 sq. meters. We rarely use this.

Canola Seed Meal 6-2.5-1 A good source of nitrogen, phosphorous, and trace materials, used by gardeners who prefer plant based meals as a source of nutrients. Canola breaks down rapidly and will supply balanced nutrients throughout the growing season. Since today’s canola crop is mainly GMO, look for ‘certified organic’ as this ensures that this is not from GMO sources. Application rate: 2-3 kg/ 10 sq meters.

Cottonseed Meal (7-2-2) A slow release, long lasting fertilizer recommended for ornamentals, lawns, perennials, acid loving plants. One application a year is sufficient. Application rate: 2-3 kg/ 10 sq meters. Good luck finding a non GMO/organic source

Feather Meal 14-0-0
Excellent slow release of nitrogen. This fertilizer gradually releases nitrogen over the season as the protein decomposes with microbial activity. Encourages humus productions and good soil tilth. Apply in the fall with a cover crop for a nitrogen rich soil the following spring. Application rate: 1-2 kg/10 sq. meters

Fish Meal (8-12-2) A great natural quick acting fertilizer that offers sustained nutrient release due to its complex nature. Often has a fishy odor due to the fish oils present. Very good for feeding beneficial soil fungus (mychorrizae). Can attract dogs and other predators so don’t sprinkle but instead incorporate deeply when cultivating or apply it in deep plug holes that are covered with 4-5 inches of soil. Application rate: 1-2 kg/10 sq. meters.

Fishbone Meal (4-22-1) Excellent alternative to bone meal. High phosphorous content is excellent for root and flower development. Made from wild fish sources. Does not have the fish oils like Fish meal has. Application rate: 1-2 kg/10 sq m.

Flax Seed Meal (6-3-2) Similar to canola seed meal in nutrient value. Use as an alternative for canola or soybean if non-GMO sources cannot be found. Application rate: 2-3 kg/ 10 sq m.

Greensand (0-1-7) Greensand loosens clay and hard soils, binds sandy soils, regulates moisture, and assists in the release of other nutrients. This natural ancient marine deposit is valued as a slow release source of potash and 30 other essential minerals. Very effective when blended into the soil during planting or bed preparation. Application rate: 2-3 kg/10 sq. meters.

Kelp Meal (2-1-5) A ages old natural fertilizer from the sea containing potassium, 60 trace elements, amino acids, carbohydrates, and growth hormones such as auxins, cytokinins and gibberellins. It is valuable for all types of gardening applications from fertilizer blends or on its own as a side dressing. Application rate: 2-3 kg/10 sq. meters.

Langbeinite (0-0-22)
Also known by the trade names of K-Mag and Sul-Po-Mag, this naturally occurring mineral fertilizer is a rich source of potassium and is best when used in granular form. Potassium aids in the formation of carbohydrates (sugars and starches), improves quality of fruits and vegetables, and stiffens plant tissue by balancing resistance to disease and cold weather. Also a great source of sulfur and magnesium. Application rate: 2-3 kg/10 sq. meters.

Rock Phosphate (0-27-0)
Rock Phosphate is a naturally occurring rock mineral. Rock phosphate is a good soil builder encouraging earthworms and beneficial soil microbes. Its natural chelating agents make trace elements more available. With adequate phosphorous, plants develop larger root systems and growth. Application rate: 2-3 kg/10 sq. meters.

Soybean meal (7-1-2) It’s very difficult to find a truly organic as most of the crop is of GMO origin or are so heavily sprayed, pesticide residues remain. Use like flax seed meal. 2-3 kg/10 sq. meters
