Arbutus menziesii Sciadopitys verticillata Paeonia lutea var ludlowii

A beautiful iconic native tree of the North American Pacific Coast. A broadleaf evergreen tree with huge clusters of incredibly sweet honey scented nectar filled bell white flowers in the spring. You can hear the buzz of hummingbirds and other nectar seekers. In the fall, green berries ripen to a brilliant orange. The rich red-cinnamon coloured bark peels off in sheets during the growing season revealing the smooth new green-tan coloured bark. Grows to 12m tall with 6m spread with graceful twists and artful curves (never straight).

This highly prized ornamental conifer is one of the five sacred trees from Japan’s Kiso forest.  Its extremely thick green luxuriant needles arranged in great whorls along the twigs and smaller branches and lovely craggy orange brown bark made me stop to admire this tree.  Its unlike any other conifer.

Huge multi-stemmed shrub to 2-3 meters in height with equal spread. In early summer plant is clothed in bright yellow faintly scented blooms. Sometimes petals are painted with some red on the reverse. Neatly cut mid green foliage.

Gorgeous!

A rare spring beauty.  Distinctive lobed leaf, single white flowers whose fleeting beauty must be enjoyed in April (here).  Quite a stunning sight when large colonies form via seedlings and/or, if it loves you, slowly spreads via creeping rhizomes.  Called Bloodroot for the reddish orange sap that seeps from the thick rhizomes when cut.  Once used as face paint by First Nations to as recently in disinfecting mouthwashes.  Likes dappled sun, but can take a few hours of full sun.  Don't place in overly damp areas nor overwater as this leads to root rot.  Survives our west coast conditions just fine Stratified seed for prompt spring germination. Ginseng translates to 'Man-Root' aptly named after the human like shape of mature roots, non the less this North American perennial is a valuable ages old medicinal herb used by many cultures.  Mature plants bear up to three large palmate leaves evenly divided from a single main stem.  A white flower umbel is nestled between the leaf stems.  Red berries follow in the Autumn.  Can make large colonies.
