A valuable rare herbaceous perennial of the Eastern North American forests.  Single stems appear in early to mid Spring from golden yellow rhizomes.  White flowers open even before the large lobed leaves unfurl.  Red berries follow and are often taken by birds. Long pleated azure-violet-blue narrow trumpet like flowers are arranged where there's a flower at every leaf axil so there could be hundreds of blooms along 1/3rd of its arching stems. Lanceolate leaves. Blooms July to September. A taller plant reaching 60 cm. From the mountains of Central Europe. Prefers calcareious soils.

A beautiful iconic native tree of the North American Pacific Coast. A broadleaf evergreen tree with huge clusters of incredibly sweet honey scented nectar filled bell white flowers in the spring. You can hear the buzz of hummingbirds and other nectar seekers. In the fall, green berries ripen to a brilliant orange. The rich red-cinnamon coloured bark peels off in sheets during the growing season revealing the smooth new green-tan coloured bark. Grows to 12m tall with 6m spread with graceful twists and artful curves (never straight).

Beautiful deciduous magnolia from the mountains of Japan. White fragrant flowers in mid April have a light pink stripe. Small shapely leaves. Nice tree overall with an upright pyramidal form. One of the parents to Loebneri hybrids. Firm petals don't mope in Spring rains nor succumb to Spring frosts. Mature plants are covered in bloom. Very hardy and problem free. Scarlet knobby seed pod/cones in the fall. Collect the seed before the birds and squirrels do!

One of the few dogwoods that flowers twice a season; once in mid spring and again in the early fall. Quite a contrast with the white flowers along side round red berry clusters. Brilliant red to purple fall colour. Co-evolved with our west coast climate of wet springs, dry summers and mild winters. Does best in either full sun or in open forest. Drought resistant when established. Fast growing. Great pollen/nectar plant for the critters.

Also known as Houpu magnolia,an exotic Chinese subspecies of M. officinalis. What makes it special is the apical notch at the tips of its large obovate leaves giving the leaves a bi-lobed shape characteristic. In May-June, antique ivory coloured 30 cm diameter sweetly scented flowers appear in abundance. Grows very quickly (1m/year) and blooms at a very young age (5-7 years). Straight trunked tree reaching an average height of 15 meters, but the odd larger specimen is known in botanical gardens. Almost non-existent in the wild due to over harvesting of its prized medicinal bark used in TCM.
