One of the last magnolias to bloom in spring, its incredibly sweet fragrant creamy white cup shaped flowers can reach 30cm across, far out sizing M. grandiflora. This hardy species looks deceptively tropical with its massive mid green leaves which have a silvery white reverse. A medium sized tree reaching 10m in height with near equal spread. Being relatively thin for their size, the delicate leaves can be damaged in strong winds so its best to seat the tree in sheltered sites. Wide spreading branches make it an ideal shade tree. Its been known to bloom at a very young age (3 years is one quote).

Germinating seed. This subspecies of Magnolia kobus is perhaps the hardiest of all magnolias. Just as beautiful as M. kobus but the tree form is quite a bit larger and has a spreading sinuous form (12 m tall and twice as wide in 50 years). White slightly fragrant white blooms open mid April. Flowers and seed from this subspecies are some what smaller than M. kobus, var kobus but the seed is significantly smaller but this doesn't hinder germination one little bit. Never lime magnolias (EVER!). Use acidic fertilizers if you need to. All magnolias love bark mulch.

So fragrant you smell them before you see them.  Delicious and extremely productive. Thick leathery evergreen glossy leaves on long stems and white flowers look very much like a smaller version of commercial varieties.  Makes dense carefree colonies when happy so filling a bucket is not hard to do. Its quite an event when the strawberries are ripe on Haida Gwaii' Rose Spit.  This species continues to be used by breeders to create many of today's strawberry cultivars.
